Last updated: 29/03/09
Do you have a university degree in ANY major? Do you want to save a good deal of money, and experience life in an Asian country at the same time? If you do, then come and teach English in Korea. We have hundreds of fantastic teaching opportunities available at public schools throughout South Korea starting in mid-August. (If you can't make the mid-August start date, we also have other Korean teaching jobs all year around. So just let us know when you would like to start, and we'll let you know about possible jobs around your preferred start date.)
Elementary, middle and high school positions are all available. Places are filling up fast for these positions so apply now to avoid disappointment.
++Salary & Benefits++
- 1.9 - 2.7 Million Won a month (depending on experience)(about R13000 to R19000 a month)
- 100,000 KRW (about R700) monthly rural allowance + 100,000KRW (about R700) monthly provincial allowance (depending on location)
- Full Airfare Reimbursement to Korea and free flight back to your home country on completion of your 1 year contract.
- Settlement Allowance - 300,000 KRW (about R2100)(one time payment) given to you within 2 weeks of arrival in Korea.
- 35 Day PAID vacation + 12 national holidays (2 weeks winter break & 1 week Spring Break & 2 weeks summer break)
- only 22 hours class teaching per week
- Overtime pay available if you would like overtime
- Severance pay equal to 1 months salary on completion of your 1 year contract.
- Free, private, furnished apartment close to your school.
- Tax exemption for 2 years apart from Canadians due to lack of ROK Treaty
- Compulsory medical insurance - 50% of premiums paid by employer ( i.e. you pay around R350 a month for this)
- Full orientation and training in a Korean resort area for 9 days with free meals and lodging
- Good savings potential - most teachers save R50000 or MUCH MORE in one year due to tax-free, rent-free salary etc (see below)
- Couples and friends welcome! We will place you at schools nearby to eachother. Couples apartments also available.
If you add all these benefits (i.e.flights/13th cheque etc) together, you are looking at a monthly salary of around R18000 a month for a first-time teacher. This is tax-free and rent-free, and your apartment will usually be close to your school so you won't need to worry about transport costs either. And you get the added benefit of experiencing life in an Asian country for 1 year, and you will be given full training.
You will be able to live off 1 million KRW to 1.5 million KRW(approx. R7000 - R10000) a month for all expenses comfortably or much less, if you are careful with your budget. Thus, there is good potential to save some money for travel or perhaps to pay off your student loan. Japan is a R1500 ferry ride away from Korea, and The Philippines and Taiwan are a R2000 (one-way) flight away. If you manage to save a mere R5000 a month, you could even spend 3 months or more backpacking around South-East Asia, lazing on tropical beaches after your 1 year contract is up. Or perhaps you could even put a deposit down on a house in South Africa.
