Description: The inner-city residential home situated in North West London provides a dedicated service to young people between the ages of 12 and 16 years. There is a maximum of 8 beds in the home. It is a dynamic and flexible service that typically supports young people who are in crisis in their family home or foster placement. Key factors in the family experiences of the client group are often mental health issues, drug and alcohol misuse and domestic violence. These young people have often come from environments of extreme neglect, abuse and deprivation, and exhibit a wide range of very challenging behaviours associated with attachment disorder and traumatic early experience. The home is also able to take emergency referrals, where there is no notice period or adequate time to prepare for the individual circumstances of the new arrival. Admissions from police stations are not unusual. Asylum-seeking young people who have just arrived in London and have no English are also common to the home.

We see our role as being a ‘bridge’ into the next part of life for the young people placed here. A key part of this work is our assessment of the young people across a range of criteria, offering analysis and recommendation which then informs Care Planning for the future. Shift work is required.
