Course Summary
Time Frame: This course is 6 hours of instruction plus the exam and breaks and lunch. (Class size & participation impact the length as well, so we recommend that you make sure to clear obligations like appts & arrange alternative accommodations for things like childcare until after 5pm to be safe - average finish times are roughly 4pm with exam.)
Registration: Is at 7:30am and class starts promptly at 8am. We don't start late and anyone that is late (without communication prior) and will be turned away.
Structure: Participation is required so you need to be alert and attentive to the material and instructor, and to participate in the class instruction. Those that don’t participate tend to not do well on the exam or in the field.
Cost & Payment: Full cost is $50. You can add yourself to the waiting list, but you must pay a non-refundable deposit equal to 50% of the fee ($25) to hold your spot in the class.
The cost is extremely low (which is why it’s only offered to current employees who are working with us and commit to working with us for the next 6 months minimum). We offer payment options to fit your needs and no one is turned away for payment issues, so let us help!
This class is only offered to our employees. However, if you are not an employee, we would love to bring you on the team and get you working! We strive to provide opportunity every day for anyone needing it. We believe that hard work, reliability, and professionalism on our sites should be rewarded and acknowledged and do our best to ensure that our newest additions to our team get the training they need to feel comfortable & confident doing their jobs safely.
Successful Traffic Control Flagger Attributes: Hard working, reliable, professional conduct, communicative, and strong work ethic who works well in a team environment & alone.
What you can Expect: You will be joining established crews who are FT permanent members of our team. This means you are coming on as a Monday - Friday employee who receives assignments daily at the end of the day. If you do not receive an assignment, you are automatically put on the morning dispatch call list for morning flagging orders.
Morning Dispatch: Morning dispatch is a big portion of our flagging orders. Dispatch starts at 5am and runs through 930am (give or take, orders can come at any time of the day). When orders come in, texts go out to all of our crews and it’s expected that texts are answered in a timely manner.
Unless you have requested a day off (at least 72 hrs in advance) you should have your gear, water & beverages, lunch, & PPE/Boots ready to be picked up and head out the door within 10-15 minutes of receiving morning dispatch. Car gassed up and everything that you need is handled so you have nothing slowing you down from getting to the jobsite in a timely manner. Jobs cannot start & crews are exposed to dangers until you get there.
Our expectations: You are considered a part of a team that strives to build confidence, be seen by the clients & community as a professional, and conducts themselves in a manner that increases visibility, grows opportunities within our current accounts, and attracts new accounts and flaggers.
Compensation & Pay: Flaggers get paid out daily. If you are off before 6pm M-F (weekends are paid first thing Monday mornings) you will be paid out by end of day (payroll starts at 4pm).
Transportation Pay: In most cases our contracts include transportation pay if you drive over 20 miles to the job site (mileage starts from the branch closest to your location). If you haul signs you receive transportation pay for under 20 miles. Transportation pay increases every 10 miles.
Note: Transportation pay is NOT free money or bonus or anything else. It’s given to you to put directly into your gas tank & be ready for the next day’s assignment.
Pay Rates: New Flaggers $19.50/hr during training/probation period of 90 days. During this period you are expected to have all of your own gear (hard hat, class 3 vest, 28” paddle, leather work boots, & radios) & be proficient enough to set up Traffic Control Zones by yourself or with minimal assistance.
Experienced PT, On-Call, & Temporary Flaggers $20.00/hr
