Essential Functions
Assist with behavior modifications of shelter animals.
Train/Coach staff and volunteers in behavior, handling, and training.
Conduct behavior consultations and assist with dog introductions for adoptions.
Counsel pet owners through private consultations over the phone or at the shelter.
Provide client education and support as needed.
Greet and assist all clients in a professional and timely manner, whether in person, via email, or over the phone.
Counsel pet owners via telephone for owned animals and follow-ups on adopted shelter animals.
Explain and demonstrate positive reinforcement training methods.
Coach individual clients on training techniques, adapting style, and tactics to meet the needs of individual clients and dogs.
Potentially teach public dog training classes, including puppy basic obedience classes. If applicable, teach advanced or specialty classes.
Contribute to CCSPCA's social media presence by capturing and creating content featuring canines.
Provides Shelter Operations Manager with observations of canine behavior updates.
Perform additional duties as needed.
Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent.
CPDT, CTC, or equivalent credentials.
Experience in the use of positive reinforcement methods, including appropriate use of humane training products.
Competent animal handler.
Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people of varying backgrounds and cultures by adapting style and tactics to fit the audience.
Comfortable speaking with members of the public, in front of groups, over the phone, and via email.
Flexible, solution-orientated, and possess a positive attitude.
Proven experience teaching public dog training classes; a one-year minimum is preferred.
Previous shelter work is highly desirable.
Background check and drug screening is required.
Valid CA driver's license and reliable transportation.
Benefits
$30 - $35 Hourly (2-6 hrs/wk)
This is a grant-funded position provided by Petco Love. The length of assignment is dependent on funding availability.
