The Emergency Department Director is responsible for the overall leadership and functions of the Emergency Department. This position provides direction and leadership to implement emergency care standards, practice and competencies. The Emergency Department Director assures that the department meets or exceeds expected outcome measures including patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction, length of stay, and clinical standards.
This position manages department finances and business goals, including budgeting and control of salary, non-salary, and capital investment expenses. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining effective and responsive relationships with patients, managing professional and clerical staff.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Effectively plans, organizes and evaluates work duties of self and unit staff to promote quality nursing and patient care activities.
1. Develop unit goals annually, in conjunction with the Emergency Department leadership team and staff, and Emergency Department Medical Director that supports the department of nursing and the hospital's philosophy, goals and objectives.
2.     Plans and maintains staffing pattern within budgeting parameters incorporating continuity of care, staff competency and patient acuity.
3.     Evaluates and sets standards for patient care and unit equipment.
4.     Collaborates with support services to provide a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.
5.     Promotes intra and interdepartmental communication.
6.     Maintains patient reference materials and ensures access to appropriate policies, procedures, standards and care guidelines.
7.     Collaborates with other Nursing Directors, Managers and other supervisory staff to facilitate the provision of high quality patient care.
8.     Works with the Medical Staff to coordinate the medical and nursing management of patient care.
9.     Utilizes staff in a manner which reflects the understanding of professional, legal and institutional constraints; the abilities of individual care providers; the holistic approach to patient care; and the use of time management principles.
10.  Evaluates patient care delivery through written documentation, observation, and comparison to established standards and national/regional benchmarks.
11.  Assists in providing nursing care to patients, as needed, to assess particular patient requirements or a backup to Staff Nurse.
12.  Serves as a clinical resource person to all ED nursing personnel.
Builds and leads a high performing Team: Motivates, inspires and develops employees to accomplish goals and objectives.
1.     Interviews and selects staff for designated unit.
2.     Maintains staff meeting at least monthly to discuss department and hospital goals, progress toward goals, and other significant information concerning the unit and organization.
3.     Provides an environment that promotes employee satisfaction and retention.
4.     Empowers staff to participate in changing process and incorporate changes into daily practices.
5.     Recognizes employee contributions.
6.     Monitors employee performance and provides ongoing feedback. Initiates corrective action when indicated. Completes employee performance appraisals according to Human Resources guidelines.
7.     Empowers staff to take ownership of patient care environment.
8.     Avoids preventable turnover. Initiates plan for change as appropriate. Ensures completion and processing of all personnel forms.
9.     Participates in recruitment events.

Requirements
Skills:
Skilled in transferring concepts into practical application.
Skilled in reading, analyzing and interpreting common scientific, and technical and specialty journals, as well as understanding regulatory requirements.
Skilled in the nursing process and effective decision making when establishing a plan of care.
Time management skills in providing excellent patient care.
Skilled in the safe and effective usage of all equipment necessary to provide patient care.
Skilled in current nursing practices and procedures and the development of a plan of care that support positive outcomes.
Skills in personnel management through coordination and cooperation.
Excellent problem-solving, time management and organizational skills
Skills to prepare complete and implement performance improvement initiatives and recommendations after appropriate analyses of relevant and reliable information.
Plan education for Emergency Department staff.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Abilities
Ability to define problems by collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Education
Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business or other applicable fields of study preferred.
Experience
Three years of management-level nursing leadership experience required, with Emergency Department experience preferred.
 
Required Licensure and/or Certifications:
Current California Registered Nursing License.
Basic Life Support certification.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support_certification.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification
