About this client/child: Peter (30) is bright young man with a cheeky sense of humour. He enjoys travelling, museums, art galleries, eating out and outdoor activities. He loves science, in particular astronomy and astrophysics. He has completed one year of a degree course with the Open University which he plans to resume later. Peter has cerebral palsy and whilst unable to communicate verbally, with support, he uses a Neuromotor communication system very effectively. He is mobile and uses a wheelchair for longer distances. Peter will require assistance with all his personal care needs. He is emotionally vulnerable and can experience anxiety, especially in social situations. He is highly intelligent and can feel depressed at times about his disabilities. Peter also has a severe allergy to mustard so his epi-pen must always be with you and vigilance required when out.
Overview of role: We are looking for an additional Support Worker to join a growing team and assist Peter with all aspects of his daily living, inside and outside the home. He requires 2:1 support when out and about, this allows someone to focus on his communication whilst the second person can focus on his physical needs. You will deliver full personal care and assist with his morning routines, mealtimes, health and physiotherapy exercises. Peter will need support with meal preparation, cutting of food, and general advice. He prefers having a structured routine and a consistent approach wherever possible. You will support him with leisure activities such as swimming, eating out, visiting museums, and social activities. Peter can experience social anxiety so choosing activities at times when they will be less busy is preferred. The role
could evolve over time as more team members are added, this may involve some different shift patterns, but you will always be guaranteed 37.5 hours a week. There could be occasions in an emergency, if Peter’s mum was taken ill for example, where an overnight stay would be required.
Who this job would suit: We are looking for a Support Worker who is empathetic, vigilant, and reliable who can respect Peter’s right to make his own decisions, whilst advising him sensitively, having his best interests at heart. An empathetic and understanding approach is required, especially on days when Peter is feeling more anxious. The family are seeking someone wishing to make a long-term commitment. The communication training provided is very specific and the main benefits to Peter will come following the first year of your training. Due to the theoretical side and practical side of Peter’s communication system, a high standard of spoken and written English is required.
What’s great about this job: This is a wonderful opportunity to make a big impact on Peter’s life and become part of a supportive team which is growing. In turn you will receive comprehensive training on Peter’s communication system and future opportunities for career development such as counselling or training in CBT.
