Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) seeks one Contract Intake Assistant - Medical Legal Partnership (JP# HOU 015-2024) for its Houston Branch Office.
LSLA is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit law firm and its mission is to protect and advance the civil rights of low-income Texans by providing advocacy, legal representation, and community education that ensure equal access to justice.
Summary of Responsibilities
This is a one-year contract Intake Assistant position under the Legal Aid Children’s Health & Security Grant, in the Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) project. Interviews clients, prepares documents which assist attorneys, researches law, and investigates facts. Performs case related clerical tasks necessary for processing files for opening and closing. Screens applicants for eligibility by telephone and in person. Performs computer and standard legal research including title searches, and prior case research. Files documents with courts, administrative agencies, and other tribunals. Schedules client appointments. Collects, delivers, and serves legal documents. Assists case handlers with biographic data collection, photocopies, and faxes documents. Performs other duties assigned by Managing Attorney. Assures the privacy of clients and exhibits a high degree of professional standard.
Requirements
Minimum Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
2 years law office related experience or 1 year college (preferred).
Minimum Skills and Experience
Applicant must also have good file processing and oral communication skills; interviewing, assessment, and problem-solving skills; as well as proficiency in English grammar, spelling, and mathematics; data entry skills; and ability to work under pressure. Bilingual (Spanish & English) speaking/writing skills preferred.
