Test Development Engineer

The Company

A UK manufacturer of electronic life safety and regulatory equipment such as fire alarms and associated items, nurse-call systems and equipment for the hard of hearing. Based in Wigan, the company employs around 250 people.
During the recent global component shortage, this company has made significant investment in its World-class manufacturing centre to exploit the outstanding potential of new products about to be released.

The Person and the Role

You will be degree or HND qualified in electronics, mechatronics or equivalent.

You will be an engineer with specialist knowledge and experience of developing ATE for production test of electronic products ranging from small low density PCBs, through high density PCBs to large multi PCB assemblies.

Collaborating with the R&D team during product development, you will define and implement the test strategy for functional and compliance requirements. This can range from low volume manual test to high volume, fully automated programme and test.

You will be comfortable with fundamental electronics and schematic drawings so as to be able to understand the equipment under test and to be able to design the test equipment.

Testers may be stand-alone go, no-go, or may be networked consoles under LabVIEW control as appropriate.

You will have demonstrable experience of as many of the following areas as you can tick:

LabViEW (essential for senior roles)
Analogue Electronics,
Digital Electronics,
Microcontrollers,
Power supplies,
Audio,
Schematic capture,
Mechanical CAD,
Appreciation of PCB design,
Appreciation of mechanical design,
Prototyping,
Bench testing,
Fault finding,
Project management,
ATE, DFM, DFT, EMC, LVD, etc.You will have an analytical and methodical approach to all aspects of your work. You will be able to synthesise solutions to problems and test them through simulation and practical prototype.

You can expect to take technical ownership of a project from beginning to end, bringing in the support of colleagues as required. You will have sufficient confidence in your abilities and awareness of your limitations that you will be able to agree reasonable timescales and work to achieve them.

You will exercise your skills and experience to design and support testers for new and existing products. You will be comfortable communicating with colleagues in all areas of the company.

Personal Development

This is a technical role in a growing team. There may be opportunities to progress to team leadership. After gaining significant product experience, there may be opportunities to transfer to the R&D department.
