Person Specification

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to join a high performing team of multi-disciplinary structural engineers including subject matter experts in delivering critical test & evaluation of complex maritime structures.

Currently, we are seeking positive individual with demonstrable experience in one or more of the subject areas listed below to be based in the Edinburgh area.

Essential Subject areas:

Fatigue Analysis and testing
Fracture Mechanics
Materials testing including data collection and analysis

Preferred but not essential:

Failure Assessment Diagrams (FAD's)
FEA skills (Finite element Analysis)
Composite structures
Macro-driven processing/post-processing
Mechanical systems engineering
Analytical structural analysis
Linear and non-linear structural analysis
Progressive failure analysis

You will work alongside engineers to deliver testing of submarine and surface ship structures, assessing their performance within the demanding environments that the platforms will be subjected to throughout their operational life.

In addition you will also support other members of the team in the field of Structural Analysis and Non-Destructive Evaluation.

Key accountabilities:

Acting as the overall technical lead/project manager being responsible for time, cost and quality of team and individual work
Production of timely and proactive engineering outputs, through attending and contributing to meetings and other communication methods, both formal and informal, as required
Definition and delivery of technical work plans, resources and tasks, working with the project manager on schedule, budget, risks, dependencies and constraints.
Ensuring effective governance to demonstrate that the technical solution meets appropriate regulatory, legal, safety and engineering standards.
Fully capturing and understanding the customers' requirements and providing innovative solutions to customers' problems.
Leading bidding activities
Building and development of customer relationships to seek out new or follow-on opportunities
Coaching and mentoring junior members of the team to aid in their professional development

Essential Qualifications

Degree level qualification or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or other suitable discipline
Membership of relevant professional engineering institution at Chartered level or commitment to achieve membership at Chartered level.
Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in an appropriate engineering role
Expert level Understanding of structural fatigue and fracture mechanics
Good Understanding of welding processes and metallurgical failure analysis.

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of complex maritime structures
Knowledge of performance capabilities of a variety or Royal Navy Platforms * Knowledge of scripting or a programming language such as Python
Working knowledge of structural fabrication and current maritime construction techniques
Ability to understand and interpret complex engineering drawings with minimum supervision
Understanding of maritime construction materials
Understanding of commercial, financial and legislative requirements of projects.
Understanding of Non-Destructive Evaluation techniques and how data obtained from NDE can influence maritime structural requirements
Familiarity with commercial FEA packages (Abaqus CAE for example)
